5 SEO Content Mistakes Killing Your Rankings (And How to Fix Them)

Most websites bleed traffic because of the same handful of content mistakes. Here's what I see over and over — and exactly how to fix each one.

1. Writing for keywords, not for people

Google rewards content that matches search intent. If someone searches "best CRM for small business," they want a comparison — not a 2,000-word essay on what CRM stands for. Match the format to what the searcher actually needs.

2. Ignoring on-page structure

Your H1 should contain your primary keyword. Use H2s and H3s to break up sections logically. Add internal links to related pages. This is the skeleton Google uses to understand your content — skip it and you're invisible.

3. Thin content that says nothing new

If your article reads like a rewrite of the top 5 results, it won't outrank them. Add original data, real examples, or a unique angle. Google explicitly rewards "information gain" — content that adds something the existing results don't cover.

4. Skipping title tags and meta descriptions

Your title tag is your #1 click-through lever in search results. Make it specific, include your keyword, keep it under 60 characters. A strong meta description (under 155 chars) is your ad copy in the SERPs — don't leave it blank.

5. Publishing and forgetting

SEO content isn't set-it-and-forget-it. Update your top posts every 6–12 months with fresh stats, new internal links, and current examples. Google favors freshness, especially for competitive queries.
