5 things I wish I knew before trying to break into media

I spent years consuming media before I realized I should be creating it. Here's what the industry doesn't tell you upfront:

1. Your "beat" is your brand. Nobody cares about another general news account. The reporters and creators who blow up own a specific corner — local politics, sneaker culture, tech in underserved communities. Pick yours early.

2. You don't need a journalism degree. Some of the best media voices right now came from Twitter threads, not Columbia J-School. What you need is consistency, a unique angle, and the ability to verify what you're saying.

3. Learn to edit before you learn to write. Seriously. Cutting your own work in half makes it twice as good. The best editors I know are brutal with their own drafts.

4. Build your network before you need it. Every major story I've seen broken came from a relationship, not a Google search. DM people. Show up to events. Be genuinely curious about other people's work.

5. Distribution > quality (at first). A decent piece that reaches 10,000 people beats a masterpiece that reaches 12. Learn platforms. Learn algorithms. Then level up the craft.

The media landscape is wide open for people willing to put in the reps. If you're serious about it, I'm building a community for exactly this — Theurbanfeed.
