Most people who start a TikTok Shop quit within the first month. Not because the opportunity isn't there β but because they make the same avoidable mistakes.
Here are the 5 I see constantly:
1. Picking products based on what YOU like, not what sells.
Doesn't matter if you think it's cool. Check what's already moving on the platform. Look at TikTok Shop trending, check competitor videos, and validate demand before spending a dollar.
2. Ignoring content completely.
TikTok Shop rewards sellers who create content. If you're listing products and hoping organic traffic finds you, you'll be waiting forever. Even simple unboxing or demo videos outperform a silent listing every time.
3. Pricing too low to cover shipping + fees.
You need to factor in TikTok's commission, shipping costs, returns, and your actual product cost. A lot of new sellers price at $9.99 thinking it'll drive volume β then realize they're losing money on every order.
4. Not using affiliate creators.
This is the single biggest growth lever on TikTok Shop right now. Find creators in your niche, send them samples, and let them sell for you on commission. One good creator can do more than 100 of your own videos.
5. Giving up after 2 weeks.
The algorithm needs data. Your first 10-15 videos probably won't pop off. That's normal. The sellers who win are the ones who iterate β test different hooks, products, and price points until something clicks.
If you're serious about building a TikTok Shop that actually makes money, start by avoiding these. The bar is low β most people never get past mistake #1.
Welcome to the crew. You just made a smart move.

Everyone's talking about TikTok Shop but most people are doing it wrong.
They scroll for hours looking for "viral products," buy 500 units from Alibaba, and pray. That's not a business β that's a lottery ticket.
Here's what actually works:
Start with demand, not products. Go to TikTok Shop's trending tab and look at what's already selling. Don't try to create demand β ride the wave that already exists.
Test with samples first. Never bulk order before you've proven the product converts. Get 5-10 units, make content, and see if the algorithm picks it up.
Your content IS your marketing. You don't need a huge following. TikTok's algorithm pushes content based on engagement, not follower count. One good video can generate thousands in sales.
Focus on repeat buyers. The real money isn't in one viral product β it's in building a shop that people come back to. Product bundles and shop branding matter more than any single listing.
I built TikTok Shop Academy to teach this exact framework step by step. No fluff, no theory β just what's working right now for real sellers.
If you're serious about building a TikTok Shop that actually makes money, this is the playbook.
