The 3 mistakes every adult makes when learning their first language
I've taught hundreds of adults their first foreign language, and almost everyone makes the same 3 mistakes at the start.
Mistake 1: Starting with grammar rules.
Kids don't learn grammar first — they learn phrases. You should too. Start with the 50 most common phrases in your target language and drill them until they're automatic. Grammar comes later and clicks way faster once you have a foundation.
Mistake 2: Studying in silence.
Language is sound. If you're only reading flashcards, you're training your eyes, not your ears or mouth. From day one, listen to native audio and repeat out loud — even if it sounds terrible. That's the point.
Mistake 3: Going it alone.
You need someone to practice with, get feedback from, and keep you accountable. A community of fellow learners changes everything. You stop feeling embarrassed and start making actual progress.
I built TongueTied specifically to fix all three of these. Structured courses that focus on real conversation, audio-first learning, and a community chat where you practice daily.
If you've been "meaning to learn a language" for years and never stuck with it — this is your sign.
