Why 90% of punters lose money (and the 3 things profitable bettors do differently)
Most punters treat betting like a lottery — pick a name they like, chuck a multi on, and hope for the best. Then they wonder why the bankroll keeps shrinking.
After years of studying form and building data models for Aussie racing, I've noticed the same three patterns in every profitable punter I've met:
1. They bet fewer races, not more.
The average weekend punter bets on 15-20 races. Profitable punters? Usually 3-5. They wait for genuine edges where the market has mispriced a runner. If the edge isn't there, they don't force it.
2. They separate the bet from the result.
A winning bet can lose. A terrible bet can win. What matters is whether the odds you took were better than the horse's true chance. If you're consistently getting value, the maths takes care of the rest over time.
3. They track everything.
Strike rate, ROI per track, ROI per distance, ROI per jockey-trainer combo. They know exactly where their edge comes from. Most punters can't tell you their win rate over the last 100 bets — profitable ones can tell you their ROI broken down by track condition.
I built TrackEdge because I wanted a place where Aussie punters who actually take this seriously could get data-driven tips and share analysis — not tips from blokes who had "a feeling about the 4."
