The one gear mistake that ruins most first camping trips
Ran a beginner camping cohort recently and noticed almost everyone made the same mistake before their first trip: they bought a sleeping bag rated for the wrong temperature.
Here's the thing nobody tells you — a bag's "comfort rating" and its "limit rating" are two different numbers, and most retail listings only show you the limit rating (the temperature at which you survive, not sleep comfortably). If you're camping in low-40s°F weather, you actually want a bag rated for the low 20s°F to have any margin for comfort.
Quick rule of thumb for beginners:
Check the EN/ISO "comfort" rating, not just "limit"
Subtract ~15-20°F from the lowest temp you expect, and buy a bag rated for that
A cheap sleeping pad matters almost as much as the bag — you lose more heat to the ground than the air
This single fix (comfort rating vs limit rating) prevents probably 80% of the "I was freezing all night and never went back" stories I hear from new campers.
