Why 'just post trends' advice is killing your growth (and what to do instead)
Every creator gets told the same thing: "just hop on trends." Nobody explains why that advice fails for 90% of people who try it.
Here's the problem — trends are not one-size-fits-all. A dance trend that gets a lifestyle creator 2M views will get a finance creator 200 views, because the audience overlap isn't there. Copying a trend format without adapting it to your niche is why so many creators feel like they're "doing everything right" and still not growing.
The creators who actually win with trends do three things differently:
1. They filter, not scroll. They're not manually checking TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts every morning hoping something jumps out. They know their niche's specific audience behavior and only look at what's rising within it.
2. They adapt the format, not the topic. "Things I wish I knew earlier" isn't a topic — it's a structure. The best creators take a viral structure and rebuild it entirely around their own niche, audience pain points, and voice. Copying the literal topic is what makes content feel derivative.
3. They post on time, not on inspiration. Trend windows are short — most have a real shelf life of 48-72 hours before saturation kills reach. Waiting until you "feel like filming" means you're posting into a dead trend.
If you're stuck at a plateau, it's rarely a content quality problem — it's a timing and relevance problem. Worth auditing your last 10 posts against those 3 points before you blame the algorithm.
