I spent 47 days in Southeast Asia on $38/day. Here's exactly how.

Most people think backpacking Southeast Asia is cheap by default. It's not — unless you know the system.

I tracked every single expense across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The average "budget traveler" spends $55-70/day. I averaged $38.

The 3 rules that saved me $1,400:

  1. Never book the first price. Hostels on booking apps charge 20-40% more than walking in. Book night-of on the app, then show the hostel the price and ask to match it minus the platform fee. Works 80% of the time.

  1. Fly on Tuesdays, bus on Thursdays. Domestic flights in Vietnam drop 30% on Tuesday mornings. Overnight buses between cities are cheapest mid-week. Plan your entire route around this.

  1. Eat where the motorbikes are parked. Not the tourist street. Not the TripAdvisor recommendation. The random stall with 15 motorbikes out front at 11:45am. $1.50 meals that are better than anything on Google Maps.

This is the kind of stuff we break down inside TripGenius — AI-optimized itineraries built for people who actually care about their budget.

If you're planning a trip on $50/day or less, you need a system. Not another generic travel blog.
