The 3-step method I use to actually let go of something (not just 'think positive')
Most "letting go" advice is just "stop thinking about it," which never works. Here's a simple 3-step process that actually creates closure:
1. Acknowledge — Say out loud (or write down) exactly what you're holding onto. Not the vague feeling — the specific thing. "I'm angry that X happened" or "I still believe I'm not good enough because of Y." You can't release what you won't name.
2. Understand — Ask why you've been holding onto it. Usually it's serving some old purpose: protection, control, familiarity. Once you see why your brain is gripping it, the grip loosens on its own.
3. Release — Do one physical or symbolic action that marks the shift: write it down and tear up the paper, say a closing sentence out loud ("I don't need this anymore"), or just consciously decide the story ends today.
It's not magic, it's just structure — most people skip step 1 and 2 and try to force step 3, which is why "just let it go" never sticks.
What's one thing you're working on letting go of right now?
