Why 'just put your phone down' doesn't work (and what actually does)

I spent years telling myself I'd "just be more disciplined" about my phone. Didn't work. Willpower is a terrible screen-time strategy — it's finite, and your phone is engineered by teams of people whose entire job is to beat it.

What actually moved the needle for me building Unplugged Labs:

1. Friction over willpower. Don't rely on remembering to put the phone down. Build a hard stop — a scheduled Focus Session that blocks distracting apps automatically. You can't doomscroll an app that's locked.

2. Measure before you manage. Most people wildly underestimate their screen time. Once you see the real number (mine was 5.5 hrs/day before I fixed it), the motivation to change shows up on its own.

3. Weekly review, not daily guilt. Checking your screen time every day turns into anxiety. A weekly report turns it into a trend you can actually act on.

If you're a remote worker or anyone whose job depends on focus, this is worth fixing. Happy to answer questions on how we approached it.
