Why 90% of "personalized" training programs aren't actually personalized
I've reviewed hundreds of "custom" programs over the years, and most of them are the same 12-week template with the client's name swapped in. Here's what actually separates a real individualized program from a reskinned PDF:
1. It changes based on your recovery, not just a calendar.
If week 3 crushed you and your sleep/soreness data says you're not recovering, a real program adjusts volume that week. A template just moves you to week 4 regardless.
2. Your equipment and schedule shape the exercise selection — not the other way around.
If you train in a home gym with dumbbells and 30 minutes a day, your program shouldn't secretly be a commercial-gym powerlifting split with substitutions bolted on.
3. Progression is based on your actual numbers, not "add 5lbs every week."
Linear progression works for month one. After that, real programming reacts to your logged performance — plateaus, injuries, life stress — not a fixed formula.
4. There's a feedback loop, not just a document.
A program you receive once and never touch again isn't coaching, it's a worksheet. Personalization means monthly iteration based on what's actually happening with your training.
This is the exact framework we use at Momentum Athletics for our 1-on-1 coaching clients — programs that evolve monthly based on real training data, not a fixed template. If you're tired of generic plans that don't account for your life, this might be worth a look.
