The #1 reason beginner VA applications get ignored (and it's not your resume)

I've reviewed a lot of failed VA applications while building resources for new virtual assistants, and there's one mistake that shows up way more than a bad resume: generic applications with zero proof of skill.

Most beginners apply with "I'm a hard worker, fast learner, great communicator" — and every single other applicant says the exact same thing. Clients skim past it in 3 seconds.

What actually gets replies:

  1. A tiny proof-of-work sample. Even a mock inbox-management screenshot or a sample social caption calendar you made for a fake client beats any bullet point.

  2. One specific tool you know cold. Not "proficient in Google Workspace" — say "I can build a client onboarding doc + shared calendar system in Notion in under an hour."

  3. A tracker mentality. Clients can tell when someone applies to everything blindly vs. someone who read their post. Reference one detail from their listing in your first line.

  4. Fast, clean follow-up. Most beginners never follow up. A polite check-in after 3-4 days puts you ahead of 90% of applicants who ghost after one message.

If you're just starting out: build 1-2 tiny sample projects before you apply anywhere. It costs you an evening and changes your reply rate completely.

Happy to answer questions from anyone trying to break into VA work.
