The 3 CFA Study Mistakes That Cost Candidates a Full Attempt
After watching hundreds of candidates go through Level I-III prep, the same three mistakes show up over and over — and each one is expensive enough to cost you a full attempt (6+ months lost).
1. Studying topics in the order they appear in the curriculum, not by exam weight.
Ethics, FRA, and Quant carry the heaviest weight at Level I, yet most candidates burn their first month on whatever topic is listed first. Pull the exam weighting before you touch a single reading and allocate hours proportionally — not sequentially.
2. Passive reading instead of active recall from week one.
Re-reading notes feels productive but doesn't build exam-day recall. Candidates who pass on the first attempt almost universally start doing practice questions and mock-exam-style problems within the first two weeks of touching a topic — not after "finishing" it.
3. No weekly checkpoint to catch drift.
A study plan without a weekly review is just a guess. The candidates who stay on track check their actual hours-per-topic against their weighting plan every single week and adjust before they fall behind — not after a mock exam reveals the damage.
If you're currently prepping for Level I, II, or III, fix these three things first — they matter more than any single resource or provider you choose.
