3 filters I run every product through before sourcing (Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop)

Before you source a single unit, run it through these three filters. I've killed more "great" product ideas with this than any spreadsheet.

1. Can it survive a 20% margin hit?

Ad costs on Amazon and TikTok Shop have climbed every year since 2021. If your product only works at today's PPC rates, it doesn't work — it's a ticking clock. Model your unit economics at 20% worse ACOS than you're currently seeing. If you're still profitable, you have a real product.

2. Is the reorder rate real or assumed?

Everyone says their product has "repeat purchase potential." Prove it before you buy inventory. Look at review velocity over 90 days, not total review count — total count tells you how long a listing has existed, velocity tells you if it's actually moving right now.

3. Does it work across at least two channels?

Single-channel dependency is the #1 reason I've seen accounts go from six figures to zero in a quarter — a suspension, a policy change, a algorithm shift on one platform, and the business is gone. Before committing real capital, ask: would this sell on Walmart or TikTok Shop too, with minor listing changes? If the honest answer is no, you're renting your business from one platform.

None of this is complicated. Most sellers just skip it because it's slower than "found it on a sourcing tool, ordered 500 units." The slow way is the only way that compounds.

What's the last product you passed on because it failed one of these? Drop it below — I'll tell you if I agree.
