The AI prompt structure that actually helps trade students pass their exams

Most students use ChatGPT/Claude like Google — they paste a question and copy the answer. That doesn't work for licensing exams, and it definitely doesn't work for practical assignments where you need to show your reasoning.

Here's the structure I use that actually moves the needle:

1. Context first. Tell the AI what trade, what code edition (e.g. NEC 2023), and what exam board you're studying for. Generic prompts get generic — and sometimes wrong — answers.

2. Ask for reasoning, not just answers. Instead of "what's the max circuit load for a 20A breaker," ask it to walk through the code section, the formula, and a worked example. You need to reproduce that reasoning on exam day, not just recognize the number.

3. Turn it into practice questions. Once you understand a concept, ask the AI to generate 5 exam-style questions on that exact topic, then grade your answers and explain what you missed.

4. Use it for lab reports too. Paste your raw notes/measurements and ask it to structure them into a proper practical write-up format — this saves hours and teaches you the format your instructors expect.

I built a full prompt library around this exact workflow for electrical, HVAC, and plumbing students — breaking down code lookups, exam simulation, and lab report writing into copy-paste prompts. If that's useful to you, it's worth checking out.
