The #1 reason beginners sound nervous (it's not what you think)

Most people think shaky public speaking comes from not knowing what to say.

It doesn't. It comes from breath.

When you're nervous, your breathing goes shallow and fast — high in the chest. That's the same breathing pattern as fight-or-flight. Your voice picks up on it instantly: it gets thinner, faster, and higher-pitched. The audience feels your nerves before they even process your words.

The fix isn't "calm down" (useless advice). It's mechanical:

  • Before you speak, take one slow breath low into your stomach (not your chest) — 4 seconds in, 4 seconds out.

  • Speak on the exhale, not while gasping for the next breath.

  • When you feel a sentence speeding up, pause and let the next breath reset your pace.

This one habit — breathing low and slow before and during speaking — does more for sounding confident than any script, tip, or trick. It's the actual foundation everything else is built on.

Built VoiceRise Academy around teaching this properly, step by step, for people who've never had formal training. If you're a total beginner working on this, happy to answer questions in the comments.
