Why I stopped watching 47 different YouTube crochet tutorials and just started teaching this way instead

When I was learning to crochet, I hit the same wall every beginner hits: a hundred YouTube videos, all skipping different steps, all assuming you already know something you don't.

So here's the actual order beginners need, that nobody teaches in order:

  1. Tools first, not stitches first. The right hook size and yarn weight make or break your first attempt. Most people quit because they picked slippery yarn or a hook too small to see their stitches.

  2. Tension before technique. How you hold the yarn matters more than the stitch itself. Get comfortable holding it before you worry about "doing it right."

  3. One stitch, one small project. Don't try to make a sweater. Make a coaster. Finishing something small builds the confidence to keep going — most people who quit crochet never finished anything.

I built Whimsy Stitches around exactly this order — free beginner course, real community, no 40-minute video required to learn a 2-minute stitch.

If you've ever wanted to try crochet and bounced off it, the problem probably wasn't you. It was the order you were taught in.
