Welcome to Wool & Needle Studio 🧶

Welcome to the Needle Felting Animal Sculpting Masterclass! I'm thrilled you've taken the first step toward creating lifelike wool animals with your own hands.

Here's what to expect

  • 16 structured lessons across 5 modules — from setting up your workspace to finishing and posing your completed animal sculpture

  • Sequential learning so each technique builds on the last

  • A certificate when you complete the full course

Getting started

  1. Head to the Felting Masterclass course and begin with Module 1

  2. Make sure you have your core tools ready — felting needles (36 & 38 gauge), a foam pad, and core wool

  3. Take your time with each lesson. Needle felting rewards patience

Connect with fellow felters

Jump into the Felting Community chat to share your progress, ask questions, and get feedback from other students. Post your work-in-progress photos — we all love seeing a sculpture come together.

Let's make something beautiful. 🐑

The #1 Mistake Beginners Make with Needle Felting (and how to fix it)

Most people who pick up needle felting for the first time make the same critical error: they stab too shallow.

Shallow poking only tangles the surface fibers. The wool feels firm on the outside but stays loose and squishy inside — and your sculpture falls apart the moment you try to add details.

The fix: go deep, then go shallow

Phase 1 — Deep felting (building the core)

  • Use a 36-gauge triangle needle (the thicker one)

  • Push the needle ¾ of the way into the wool

  • Work in consistent, straight up-and-down motions — no angling

  • You'll feel the wool tighten from the inside out

  • Keep going until the shape holds firmly when you squeeze it

Phase 2 — Surface felting (smoothing & shaping)

  • Switch to a 38-gauge star needle (finer)

  • Now stab only ¼ inch deep

  • Use rapid, light pokes to smooth the surface

  • This is where you refine the shape without distorting it

How to tell if your core is tight enough

Press the shape between your thumb and forefinger:

  • Too soft → it compresses easily, needs more deep felting

  • Just right → firm with a tiny bit of give, like a stress ball

  • Too hard → you've over-felted (it happens — just wrap more wool around it and continue)

This two-phase approach is the foundation of every animal sculpture I make. Nail this, and everything else — faces, fur texture, tiny paws — becomes dramatically easier.
