@wlsolutionsĀ·Jul 13Spent the last few years in the trucking back-office world ā dispatch, rate negotiation, paperwork ā for owner-operators who just got their authority. The #1 mistake I see new authority holders make isn't a bad load. It's not knowing their own numbers before they even start looking for freight.
Here are the 3 numbers you need before you touch a load board:
1. Your true cost-per-mile (CPM). Fuel, insurance, truck payment, maintenance reserve, permits, your own pay ā add it all up and divide by your monthly miles. Most new operators only count fuel and payment, and end up running loads at a loss without realizing it.
2. Your rate floor. Once you know CPM, add your target margin. That's the lowest rate you accept, period ā no exceptions for a 'nice broker' or a load that's 'better than nothing.' Deadhead miles kill more new authorities than low rates do.
3. Your deadhead tolerance. Decide upfront how many empty miles you're willing to eat to reposition for a better lane. Write it down. Brokers can sense hesitation, and a number on paper stops you from talking yourself into a bad decision at 11pm on a Friday.
Most new operators learn these the hard way over 3-6 months of thin margins. If you already know them, you're ahead of most of the market.
