The one mistake that separates broke bettors from long-term winners
Most people who lose money betting don't lose because their picks are bad. They lose because of how they size their bets.
Here's the thing nobody tells beginners: even a bettor hitting 55% on spreads (which is genuinely good) will go on losing streaks of 5-8 games. That's just math, not bad luck. If you're betting 10% of your bankroll per game, a losing streak like that wipes you out before your edge ever plays out.
The fix is boring but it works: flat unit sizing. Pick 1-2% of your bankroll as "one unit." Every bet is 1-3 units depending on confidence. Never deviate, even after a big win or a bad beat.
A few other things that actually move the needle for everyday bettors:
Track every bet in a spreadsheet — sport, line, result, units won/lost. You can't fix what you don't measure.
Closing line value matters more than your win rate. If you're consistently getting better numbers than the closing line, you're doing something right even during a cold stretch.
Ignore parlays as a strategy. They're fun for $5, not a bankroll plan.
Been building this out with a small community (Worldwide Bets) focused on exactly this — daily picks across NFL/NBA/MLB/UFC plus the bankroll and strategy side most people skip. Happy to answer questions here either way.
