The 5 things new parents actually use in the first two weeks

Most baby registries are padded. After talking to new parents, this is what actually gets used in week one and two — and what can wait.

1. Diapers and wipes, more than you think

You will go through them constantly. Size 1, not newborn, unless the baby is small. Wipes matter as much as diapers.

2. Gentle wash and lotion

A mild wash, a soft cloth, and a simple lotion. Skip the 12-step bath set. One product that does not sting beats five scented bottles.

3. A safe sleep setup

A firm, empty crib or bassinet. No pillows, no extras. This is not the place to cheap out or over-decorate.

4. A few changes of clothes that actually fit

Newborn sizes get outgrown fast. 0–3 months, easy snaps, nothing fussy.

5. Something to carry the baby without wrecking your back

A simple stroller or carrier you can actually use outside. Fancy gear that stays in the box does not count.

What you can skip for now

Bottle warmers, wipe warmers, extra swings, and most "must-have" gadgets. Buy those later if you still want them.

If you are expecting or you just brought a baby home, start with the daily stuff. The rest can wait until you know what your baby actually needs.
