20 years of GNC taught me most 'fitness advice' after 40 is wrong
I ran a 3-store GNC franchise for 20 years and I've trained myself for over 50. Here's what I saw over and over with customers 40+:
They chase the same routines and supplements that worked for them at 22 — then wonder why they're sore for a week or not seeing results.
Three things that actually move the needle after 40:
Protein timing beats protein amount. Most people already eat enough protein — they just eat it all at dinner. Spreading it across 3-4 meals matters more for muscle retention as you age.
Joint prep isn't optional anymore. A 5-minute mobility warmup isn't 'wasting time before the real workout' — skip it and you'll pay for it in your knees and shoulders within a year.
Recovery supplements only work if your sleep is already dialed in. I sold a lot of magnesium and ZMA to people who were still only sleeping 5 hours a night — no supplement fixes that math.
Started putting this into a coaching community (Youth Unlimited) for people who want straight answers instead of guessing. Happy to answer questions here too.
