Most short-form views happen on mute. Auto-captions still lose.
If you post Reels, TikTok, or Shorts, you already know the number: a huge share of views happen with the sound off.
What people get wrong is treating closed captions as the fix.
Platform auto-captions sit in a tiny box. They disappear. They do not match the edit. They look like an accessibility overlay, not part of the video. Viewers scroll.
Burned-in captions are different. They are in the frame. You control size, color, position, and timing. They work as a hook in the first second, not as a subtitle track someone has to turn on.
The real bottleneck is volume. If you post 10+ videos a week — or the same video in English, Spanish, and Portuguese — doing this in CapCut one file at a time is how a whole afternoon disappears.
What actually works:
Caption the batch, not the clip
Lock one style system (font, color, safe-zone) and reuse it
Hard-code the text into the file so it survives every platform
Translate at export, not in a second editing pass
If your watch time is flat and you already know the content is fine, check whether people can read the video with the sound off. That is usually the leak.
