Founded back in 2012, Talkspace was one of the earliest online therapy providers. The platform offers therapy for individuals (age 18+), teens, and couples. It also provides medication through its psychiatry services. 

Talkspace offers several pricing plans that are covered by insurance. It’s also accessible across the United States - and in most countries worldwide. To use Talkspace, you’ll need to be able to access the internet.

Remember that you won’t be able to use the platform if you live in a country that blocks VoIP.

How does Talkspace work?

Once you’ve established your insurance coverage - or paid for the service yourself - Talkspace will match you with a licensed therapist. The selected therapist will be chosen to suit your personal needs. 

The way you communicate with your therapist will depend on your plan. These include:

  • messages
  • live therapy sessions
  • a mix of both

You’ll have a secure online therapy room for your messages, which are fully encrypted. Messages are sent asynchronously. This means you won’t communicate back and forth in real time. You can post a message at any time via text, voice, or video messages. Then you’ll get a response within one working day (in their business hours).

Live sessions are different, as they’re in real-time. You can schedule these in advance with your therapist, and choose to interact over video, audio, or text chat.

If you don’t feel you connect with your first therapist, you can change to a new provider. This is completely free of charge.

First, there are therapy services for individuals, aged 18+. If you choose this route, you’ll be matched with a licensed therapist. As mentioned above, you can choose to have therapy via messaging, live sessions, or both. The options available vary based on your pricing plan.

There’s a separate therapy service for teenagers specifically ages 13 to 17. Teens will be matched with a licensed therapist who specializes in providing therapy to teenagers. As with therapy for adults, you’ll have a secure, online therapy room.

Parents or guardians can only access this room if you show them directly. (Keep in mind that in most U.S. states, teens under the age of 18 usually require parental or guardian consent to access therapy.)

Talkspace also offers couples therapy sessions. In these sessions, you and your partner will be asked questions about your relationship history and goals. Then, the therapist will work with you both to resolve interpersonal issues and strengthen your relationship.

BetterHelp offers therapy for individuals (age 18+), teens, and couples. You won’t be able to access medication through BetterHelp, as the platform doesn’t have a psychiatry service. 

In most cases, BetterHelp therapy is not covered by insurance. (However, you can contact your insurance provider to clarify this.) You can access BetterHelp across the entire United States, and about 200 other countries. 

How does BetterHelp work?

Once you’ve created an account and added your card details, you’ll be asked some questions, which will help to match you with a suitable therapist. You can provide details about what they should have experience with, and why you feel you would benefit from therapy.

After this, you should be matched with a therapist within hours, or a few days at the most. 

You can communicate with your therapist in the way that suits you best - via phone, video, text, or chat. You can send messages to your therapist whenever you need. Therapists will typically respond within 24 hours, though this will vary depending on the provider.

You can also schedule live therapy sessions on your mobile or PC too. If you want to change therapists, you can do this an unlimited number of times for free.

Like Talkspace, BetterHelp offers therapy sessions for individuals over the age of 18. Counselors on the platform are all licensed and go through a rigorous screening process.

These include professionals qualified in a variety of roles, including therapists, psychologists, and clinical social workers. 

They’re qualified to either a master’s or doctoral level and will have a minimum of 3 years and 1,000 hours of industry experience. When you’re matched with a therapist, you’ll be able to find information about their experience and qualifications on their profile.

You’ll have four live sessions each month. Counselors on BetterHelp typically offer 30 to 45-minute sessions.

So, in terms of reviews, how does BetterHelp rank? On Trustpilot, the platform currently has a 4.4 star “Excellent” rating.
