Discord is one of the most popular instant communication apps, with over 200 million monthly active users as of May 2025.
A primary feature of Discord is text-based chatting — so it's important to know how to use Discord's tools. One handy tool is the hyperlink.
You probably share links all the time online — it’s one of the easiest ways to send information to others across the web.
Discord knows this, which is why when you send a link in chat, it automatically turns blue and shows a preview below it. But links can get really long and look pretty messy in your messages.

Instead of sharing long, messy links, you can make a hyperlink. A hyperlink is text that is clickable and will direct users to a URL:

You can do this by using the hyperlink formatting method on Discord.
In this guide, we’re going to teach you how to avoid long and messy links by formatting text as hyperlinks.
What is Discord formatting?
Discord lets its users use markdown formatting.
With Discord formatting, you can bold, italicize, strike, or even mark text as a spoiler.
This helps you make your messages look much better and more accessible compared to plain text messages. It's just one of many ways that you can improve the appearance of a Discord server.

Formatting is especially useful if you're a server owner. Using tools like headers, bullet lists, and hyperlinks can make your core Discord channels — like #rules or #server-information — look cleaner and more polished than plain text.
Plus, good formatting makes your content more accessible, helping users quickly find information and easily jump from one section to another.
Check out the comparison below. The version on the left does not use Discord formatting. As you can see, the links are long URLs, and there are no headings or subheadings.
Meanwhile, the same message on the right uses formatting like titles, bullet points, hyperlinks, and subtext — making it easier to read and navigate.

Pro tip
If you have a long text in any of your channels, you can copy the link of the message (or the first message in a channel) and hyperlink it to the bottom of the message/channel as a 'Scroll to top' button.
Why use hyperlinks in Discord?
We all share URLs with our friends while chatting. They're useful, but they can be long and messy. Instead of using link shorteners, you can use Discord's hyperlink feature to make your messages look cleaner.
But before using hyperlinks, you need to understand link embeds.
When you send a link on Discord, a link embed will appear, which shows a preview of the link you have shared.
You can remove the embed by clicking on the "X" button that appears when you hover over it.
If you want to avoid the link embed from showing up in the first place, you can surround the link with less-than and greater-than signs like this:
<https://whop.com/>

Pro tip
If a user doesn't have the Embed Links Discord role permission, the URLs they send won't have a link embed.
How to make hyperlinks on Discord
To avoid posting whole links, you can use the format below so your link looks like this, instead of https://whop.com/blog
- [Whop.com hyperlink text](https://whop.com/blog/)

This is a common Markdown method for creating hyperlinks, and it also works when you want to hyperlink just part of your message.
To hide the link preview (embed), simply wrap the URL in angle brackets — like this: <link>.

Pro tip
If you don't want to bother with typing all the formatting, you can just copy the link, highlight a text, and paste the link. Doing this will automatically format the highlighted text as a hyperlink.
